In this vivid oil on canvas from the 1750s, Francesco Guardi depicts a pivotal biblical moment. Abraham kneels, head bowed in reverence, as three resplendent angels appear on a cloud, their pastel gowns and feathery wings catching the light. One angel gestures upwards, delivering the astonishing news that Abraham's aged wife, Sarah, will bear a son. Sarah herself is visible, discreetly peeking from behind the door of their cottage, an expression of surprise on her face. This dramatic 18th-century painting would make a captivating focal point in a traditional living room or a study.
