During the mid-1860s in Paris, Édouard Manet explored still life painting, a genre gaining renewed appreciation among the burgeoning middle class. Painted in 1864, this oil on canvas evokes the rich tradition of 17th-century Dutch masters, yet Manet's approach was distinctly modern. His direct execution, bold brushwork, and immediate vision were considered unorthodox and even confrontational by the public. Despite being a "dead nature" composition, the seafood appears remarkably fresh and vigorous, with the placement of the carp dynamically offsetting other elements. This vibrant piece would make a striking addition to a contemporary kitchen or a sophisticated dining area.
