This informal self-portrait, painted around 1809, offers a poignant glimpse into the world of Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk, an Amsterdam painter whose promising career was tragically cut short. Created shortly before his untimely death-legend says from a cold caught sketching outdoors at night-this oil on panel work captures the artist in his studio. Van Troostwijk, with a palette and brushes in hand, looks out at the viewer, presumably from his reflection. Behind him, on a cupboard, are traditional plaster casts of Classical sculptures, indispensable models for any artist of the period. The painting conveys a quiet, reflective mood
