Around 1818, back in Amsterdam after a formative period in Rome, painter Woutherus Mol captured the likeness of his friend, the sculptor Paulus Joseph Gabriël. The two artists had journeyed to Rome together around 1810, supported by a royal subsidy from Louis Napoleon. This oil on canvas portrait not only commemorates their bond but also hints at Gabriël's profession, featuring a sculpted male head in the background-a style characteristic of his work. It's a compelling glimpse into an early 19th-century artistic friendship, perfect for adding a touch of historical elegance to a study or library.
