In this 1810 oil on canvas by Charles Howard Hodges, Willem Bilderdijk, a Dutch poet and scholar, is depicted leaning thoughtfully on his right arm, which rests on a table laden with books and papers, including a quill pen. His gaze is directed towards the viewer, conveying a sense of introspection. A staunch monarchist, Bilderdijk faced exile for opposing French Republican rule, later returning under King Louis Napoleon. The unfinished epic poem "The Destruction of the First World," written for the King, lies prominently on the table - a poignant detail given Louis Napoleon's abdication just six months later
