In the early 17th century, during the flourishing Dutch Baroque, painters like Dirck van Baburen brought dramatic mythological narratives to life with striking realism. This 1623 oil on canvas depicts the agonizing moment of Prometheus's punishment: having stolen fire from the gods for mankind, the titan is chained to a rock by Vulcan. His face is contorted with terror, while Mercury observes the scene with a mocking laugh. The eagle, his future tormentor, is already visible above. Van Baburen, a member of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, masterfully employs dramatic illumination and figures with sun-darkened hands and faces, directly inspired by his great model
