An intimate glimpse into late 18th-century family life, this informal portrait by Nicolaes Muys, painted in 1797, captures the Van Beeftingh family in their home. The mother, Jacoba Maria Boon, nurses her baby - a remarkably advanced depiction for its era. Her husband, Aernout, is absorbed in examining a print from his collection, while their eldest son carefully places a portfolio of drawings into a collector's cabinet. The younger children are playfully engaged: Jozua with a toy horse and whip, and toddler Pieter, safe in his high chair with a padded head covering, enjoying a biscuit. This detailed oil on panel painting would bring a warm, historical narrative to a family room or a study.
