This compelling oil on panel by Hans Memling, painted around 1485, presents a man in solemn prayer, his hands clasped and his gaze directed beyond the frame. Originally, this portrait formed the right wing of a diptych, facing a depiction of the Virgin and Child. The sitter, dressed in a dark garment and a distinctive cap, is placed in an interior setting, with a window revealing a serene landscape on the left and a vase of vibrant red flowers on a mantelpiece to the right. The reverse of the panel, intended to be seen when the diptych was closed, featured Saint Anthony of Padua in grisaille
