Painted in the late 16th century, this oil on panel by Bartholomeus Spranger exemplifies the sophisticated elegance of international Mannerism. Around 1585-1590, Spranger depicted the poignant moment when Venus, goddess of love, futilely warns her lover Adonis about the dangers of the hunt, knowing he will be tragically killed by a wild boar. To the left, Cupid, the god of love, already gestures in despair, foreshadowing the inevitable. Spranger's characteristic style is evident in the tall, slender figures with their small heads. The deliberately old-fashioned hilly landscape, derived from an earlier 16th-century painting, lends a timeless quality to this mythological narrative
