Created in late 15th-century Florence, this exceptional diptych by Piero di Cosimo (1482-1485) portrays the prominent architect Giuliano da Sangallo and his recently deceased father, Francesco. These oil on panel portraits are notable for characterizing their subjects by profession. On the left, Giuliano is depicted with a pen and compass, symbols of his architectural craft. On the right, his father Francesco, also an architect and a musician, is shown with a sheet of music, highlighting the principles of harmony and proportion central to both their disciplines. This vibrant and detailed work would bring a touch of Renaissance elegance to a living room or a classic study.
