Peter Paul Rubens's 1620 oil on panel depicts Saint Albert of Louvain dramatically foreshortened, gliding majestically on a cloud. The saint, holding a palm frond and a book, is framed by an oval of golden light and accompanied by two cherubs. This study was a proposal for the ceiling of the Jesuit church in Antwerp, where its bold perspective would have created the illusion of a window to the open sky. The dynamic composition and celestial theme make it a striking piece for a room seeking a touch of Baroque grandeur.
