From mid-15th century Florence, a hub of artistic innovation, comes this panel by Fra Filippo Lippi, painted in 1458. Originally part of a triptych commissioned by Giovanni di Cosimo de’Medici for Alfonso V of Aragon, this tempera on wood depicts Saint Anthony the Abbot. Regarded as the founder of monasticism, he is shown in a monk's habit, holding his distinctive staff. Lippi, a Carmelite friar and a great master of the Early Renaissance, brought a sense of realism and weight to his figures, placing them in three-dimensional space using linear perspective
