At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna was a hub of artistic innovation, and Gustav Klimt stood at the forefront of the Secession movement. This painting, created around 1899-1900, embodies his unique Symbolist style, originally conceived as part of a monumental series for the University of Vienna's ceiling.
