At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna was a hub of artistic innovation, and Gustav Klimt stood at the forefront of the Secession movement. This painting, created around 1899-1900, embodies his unique Symbolist style, originally conceived as part of a monumental series for the University of Vienna's ceiling. The composition plunges into a dark abyss, from which a multitude of figures emerge. A central nude male figure, bound and embraced by a dark, serpent-like entity covered in golden dots, appears in distress. Around him, women with flowing red hair and stylized golden accents on their bodies are depicted with closed eyes or pensive expressions. Above
