In the early 17th century Dutch Republic, landscape painting rose to prominence, and Esaias van de Velde's 1622 oil on panel marked a significant milestone. This work was the first time a Dutch painter depicted the flat, watery native landscape in such a monumental format. As dusk descends, the light softly fades over the glistening river, which gracefully winds into the distance. The viewer's eye is drawn along the river, past numerous small figures going about their day and a ferry crossing with passengers and livestock. Its tranquil mood and expansive view would beautifully complement a study or a hallway, adding a touch of historical serenity.
