During the early 18th century in Istanbul, Jean Baptiste Vanmour created portraits of key figures at the Ottoman court for a European audience. This oil on canvas, painted circa 1727-1730, depicts the reis effendi, the head of the chancery, a figure comparable to a foreign minister. Dressed in luxurious garments and a distinctive turban, the bearded official is shown diligently writing on a scroll at a beautifully inlaid desk, surrounded by other documents and writing tools. The reis effendi was the primary point of contact for Western diplomats, such as Ambassador Calkoen, who would have met him frequently. This insightful portrait, with its rich details and historical context
