An imposing figure of Saint Benedict sits enthroned at the heart of this early Renaissance altarpiece. Clad in a flowing green robe and a grey tunic adorned with gold, he gazes downwards with a look of serene contemplation. Two haloed saints, holding martyrs' palms, flank his marble throne, while at his feet, four smaller figures kneel in devotion, including a tonsured monk in prayer. Fra Filippo Lippi painted this tempera on wood panel around 1440, showcasing the period's rich colors and delicate rendering of faces against a shimmering gold background.
