From the vibrant world of 17th-century Dutch genre painting, Jan Havicksz. Steen offers a glimpse into a private, intimate moment. Painted with oil on panel between 1655 and 1660, the artwork shows a young woman undressing before bed. She is in the process of removing a stocking, with the garter's imprint still visible just below her knee, her skirt raised to reveal her legs. Such explicit nudity was once considered quite daring; for a hundred years, an underskirt was painted over her thighs. This piece would bring a quiet, reflective atmosphere to a personal study or a cozy living room.
