The painting captures a dramatic moment: a striped tiger pouncing on a buffalo amidst a dense, fantastical jungle. Henri Rousseau, a self-taught artist and retired customs inspector, painted this scene in 1908. He never left France, yet he created his famous jungle works by drawing inspiration from travel books and visits to Parisian botanical gardens. This particular composition, one of his largest and most important, features sharply outlined hothouse plants enlarged to fearsome proportions
