A subtle, directed light picks out the forms in this dark, circular still life, making the objects glow against an almost black background. The palette is muted and earthy, with the dull gleam of the pewter flagon and the warm brown of the earthenware jug providing the main points of interest, while the wine glass subtly catches the illumination. Painted in 1614 by the controversial Johannes Torrentius, this Dutch Baroque oil on panel is a powerful allegory for temperance. A bridle, a wine glass, and a piece of paper inscribed with "what is out of measure, perishes in immeasurable evil" serve as stark reminders to curb one's appetites
