This oil on canvas by Jean Baptiste Vanmour, painted between 1730 and 1737, depicts the violent suppression of Patrona Halil and his followers. The scene unfolds within a grand, arcaded palace setting, where numerous figures in detailed Ottoman dress are engaged in a deadly struggle. On the right, Patrona Halil, a rebel leader who sought greater power after Mahmud I's ascension, is visibly being overpowered. Sultan Mahmud I had summoned these rebels to the palace under a false pretense, where they were systematically killed. The painting's dramatic composition and historical detail make it a compelling piece for a living room or study interested in historical narratives.
