A dramatic play of light and shadow defines this Baroque oil on panel, drawing the eye to the central figure of King Jeroboam. Bright highlights illuminate the king's horrified expression as his hand withers, while a fiery glow emanates from the shattering altar on the right, contrasting with the dark smoke billowing into the sky. Jacques Ignatius de Roore masterfully depicts the biblical narrative from the early 18th century, showing Jeroboam's punishment for commanding his people to idolatry and defying God's first commandment. This detailed and dynamic composition would make a compelling statement piece in a study or a classically styled living room.
