This striking oil on wood portrait by Parmigianino from 1523 presents Lorenzo Cybo, Captain of the Papal Guard, with a composed, almost arrogant gaze. The blond sitter, formally dressed, holds a dagger, while a massive two-handed sword rests nearby, so heavy that a young boy helps support it. A game board with dice and tokens in the foreground hints at his leisure time. The artist masterfully brings Cybo to life, as noted by Giorgio Vasari, who felt Parmigianino "created him of flesh and blood." This detailed Renaissance work would enhance a sophisticated study or a traditionally styled living room.
