In the early 19th century, Naples was a mandatory stop for European artists and travelers, drawn by its dramatic landscapes and ancient sites. Antonie Sminck Pitloo, a Dutch painter who settled there, captured the famous Grotto of Posillipo in this 1826 oil on canvas. This natural tunnel, 700 meters long and six meters high, was a popular attraction. Pitloo renders the passage as a dark, narrow opening that seems to swallow all light, yet a faint gleam is discernible at its far end. The deep shadow of the cave creates a striking contrast with the sun-drenched rock wall outside, where various figures and carriages are visible. This painting
