Otto van Veen's oil on panel, painted between 1600 and 1613, employs a distinct brushwork that renders the foreground figures with sharp detail, contrasting with the softer, more generalized forms of the distant armies. This technique creates a dynamic sense of depth, capturing the moment a Batavian's betrayal almost grants the Romans victory over Julius Civilis's forces. Part of a series commissioned by the Dutch parliament for the Binnenhof, this work historically linked the Batavian uprising against Rome to the Dutch Republic's own struggle for independence from Spain. Its dramatic narrative would suit a study or a living room with an appreciation for historical art.
