Paul Gauguin's arrival in Tahiti in 1891 marked a pivotal moment, as he sought a primal paradise away from European civilization. This oil painting on jute canvas vividly portrays the island's abundant flora, from the thick-trunked, violet hotu tree to spindly mango and coconut palms, and short banana plants with their splayed leaves. In the foreground, daily life unfolds as a man uses a stick to crack a coconut, while a family relaxes in the grass with a sleeping dog nearby. Gauguin deliberately chose a coarsely woven jute canvas, a less expensive and more accessible material than traditional linen, allowing its rugged, organic texture to show through the paint layers.
