Standing tall and serene, Saint Anthony Abbot gazes directly at the viewer from this slender panel. Clad in a simple brown cloak over a dark habit, the bearded figure holds a staff, his hands clasped around it. He is set against a shimmering gold background, standing on a blue, cloud-like base. Painted by Fra Angelico between 1440 and 1441 using tempera on panel, this artwork was once part of a grand altarpiece for the high altar of San Marco in Florence, commissioned by Cosimo de’ Medici. The Egyptian hermit, a fourth-century figure considered the founder of Christian monasticism
