Within a dark, arched frame, Saint Matthew appears half-length, intently focused on writing his Gospel. The apostle, characterized by a full beard and a serene expression, holds a quill pen in his right hand and an open book with an inkpot in his left, poised to dip the pen. The shimmering gold background, typical of 14th-century painting, highlights his figure and the delicately incised halo. This panel, created by Simone Martini, a master of Sienese Gothic art, was originally part of a series of ten apostle portraits. Its contemplative and studious nature makes it a fitting addition to a library or a quiet study.
