Created by Edgar Degas around 1878-80, this oil on wood panel painting offers a glimpse into the late 19th-century Parisian art scene. It's an intimate double portrait of Paul Lafond, who would later become the curator of the art museum at Pau, and Alphonse Cherfils, a devoted art collector and champion of the Impressionists. Degas inscribed the upper left corner with a dedication to "his dear friends." These two played a significant role in advancing Degas's career, influencing the selection of his works for exhibitions and facilitating the first museum acquisition of his painting, A Cotton Office.
