During the 18th century, cityscapes were highly sought after by European courts, and Bernardo Bellotto, nephew and pupil of Canaletto, became a master of the genre. Around 1746, he was appointed court painter in Dresden, where he received a commission to depict the nearby town of Pirna. This oil on canvas from circa 1760 is a reduced yet exact replica of one of those celebrated works. The fortress of Sonnenstein presides over the scene from its hilltop, bathed in Bellotto's characteristic cold, crystalline light. In the left foreground, townsfolk gather around a small obelisk bearing the arms of Saxony. This detailed view would be a striking addition to a classically-inspired living room.
