This captivating portrait by Francisco Goya, painted in 1783, emerges from the vibrant milieu of late 18th-century Spanish court life, where commissions for noble families were common. It depicts María Teresa de Borbón y Vallabriga, the Spanish king's eldest niece, at just four-and-a-half years old. Goya masterfully grants her an impression of maturity through her confident stance and the elegant white lace mantilla she wears. The artist's choice of a low viewpoint, further emphasized by the distant mountains, makes the young subject appear taller and more commanding. This work, with its blend of formality and youthful charm
