Rendered in pastel on a dark ground, this 1904 work by Wassily Kandinsky features visible, textured strokes that build up a rich surface. The handling of the medium allows the underlying dark tone to peek through, adding intensity and depth to the vibrant colors. A tall, bearded figure in a dark, elaborately patterned robe and a green cap dominates the right side of the composition. The background features horizontal bands of vivid reds, oranges, blues, and yellows, topped by a swirling mass of purple and dark red in the upper left, evoking a dramatic or mystical sky. This early exploration of color and form to convey symbolic meaning, characteristic of Kandinsky's pre-abstract period
