A dramatic, warm light breaks through the heavy clouds, illuminating the rocky landscape and the figures in this vibrant oil on panel. The palette is dominated by golden and earthy tones, creating an intense atmosphere. Painted by David Teniers the Younger between 1654 and 1656, this work is one of over 200 lively, small-scale copies he created to record the superb art collection of his patron, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. Teniers, a prolific painter also serving as the archduke's curator, made these as models for the engraved illustrations in the "Theatrum Pictorium," a catalogue published in 1660. It would complement a traditional study or a classically styled living space.
