Painted in Amsterdam in 1809, this grand full-length portrait served as a powerful statement of the new monarch's authority and presence. Charles Howard Hodges captured Louis Napoleon, brother of Bonaparte, during his brief reign as King of Holland. Dressed in military uniform and adorned with the Order of the Union and the Legion of Honour, he stands as the sovereign who, contrary to his brother's wishes, developed a strong affinity for his new kingdom and championed Dutch interests, before being forced to abdicate in 1810. This oil on canvas offers a glimpse into a pivotal period of Dutch history under French influence, making it a fitting addition to a study or a formal living space.
