In the vibrant Netherlands of the early 19th century, Willem Bartel van der Kooi created this engaging domestic scene, an oil on canvas from 1813. The painting depicts a young girl at a pianoforte, her practice playfully interrupted by two boys, likely siblings, who are engrossed in a game with a chair. Van der Kooi, a master at portraying children, meticulously arranged the figures into a triangular composition, giving the work the spontaneous feel of a snapshot despite its careful planning. While it remains unknown if this is a portrait or an imagined scene
