The painting glows with a rich, warm palette, where figures are brightly illuminated against a darker, lush woodland backdrop, drawing the eye to the mythological revelry. On the left, Diana, serene in her pink drapery, is attended by nymphs and a hunting dog, with quivers and a horn visible nearby. Opposite her, Bacchus, corpulent and crowned with grapevines, presides over his boisterous retinue of satyrs and putti, who are engaged in drinking, music-making, and general merriment, even with a goat. This oil on panel by Hendrik van Balen, dating from around 1617-1625, exemplifies the Flemish Baroque and would bring a lively, classic touch to a dining room or a study.
