From his unique vantage point in Istanbul, the Flemish painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour chronicled the customs and daily life of the Ottoman court and elite society in the early 18th century. In this oil painting from around 1720-1737, he depicts a private banquet of distinguished Turkish women, attended by enslaved female servants. They are shown enjoying an evening meal, while one woman nurses her child by the window. Affluent Turkish women were known for their frequent social calls, often staying overnight, a testament to a bustling social calendar that kept them constantly visiting.
