The eye is immediately drawn to the chaotic foreground of this oil on panel painting, where fallen soldiers and a toppled horse convey the brutal reality of battle. Behind them, the main clash between Batavian and Roman forces rages, a dense mass of figures locked in combat along the Rhine river. Otto van Veen created this powerful work between 1600 and 1613 as part of a twelve-panel series commissioned by the Dutch parliament. Intended for display in the Binnenhof, The Hague, these paintings served to draw parallels between the ancient Batavian uprising against Rome and the contemporary Dutch revolt against Spain
