This oil on panel painting from around 1628 captures Rembrandt van Rijn in his early years in Amsterdam, when self-portraits were a vital part of his artistic experimentation and learning. Even as a young, relatively inexperienced artist, Rembrandt was bold in his approach. Here, his face is mostly shrouded in deep shadow, with a striking beam of light catching only his right cheek. It takes a moment for the viewer to discern his intense gaze emerging from the darkness. He masterfully scratched into the still-wet paint with the butt end of his brush
