A warm, subdued light permeates this painting, casting a glow on the central figures while rich reds and browns define the architectural space. Painted by Jean Baptiste Vanmour between 1720 and 1737, this oil on canvas depicts a captivating religious ceremony in a circular hall in Istanbul. Dervishes, known for their spiritual practices, engaged in prayer, music, and ecstatic dance to achieve a trance-like state and connect with Allah. Vanmour, an artist who lived in the Ottoman capital, frequently observed these weekly performances, which were open to visitors. Its historical depth and vibrant, yet subtle, colours would enhance a study or a room with a worldly, traditional decor.
