During the Dutch Golden Age, marine painting flourished, and Hendrick van Anthonissen was a master at depicting the bustling life of the nation's ports. This oil on canvas, painted between 1640 and 1650, offers a view of the Oosterschelde near Zierikzee. In the foreground, a tjalk-type sailing boat, commonly used for cargo, is prominent, with a large warship flying Dutch flags visible behind it. To the right, the historic Zuidhavenpoort, the southern harbour gate, stands with its distinctive towers, surrounded by other vessels and the activity of the quay. This vibrant scene of a 17th-century Dutch harbour would add a sense of history and movement to a study or living room.
