A friar in a dark habit stands over a fallen man, holding a musket high above his head. The dramatic moment captures the friar having just disarmed or about to strike the man, who lies on the ground with an expression of pain and a hint of blood on his light shirt. Painted by Francisco de Goya around 1806, this oil on panel work depicts a widely known contemporary event in Spain: the capture of the notorious criminal El Maragato by Friar Pedro de Saldivia. The friar outsmarted the bandit, seizing his gun, shooting him in the thigh as he tried to flee, and finally tying him up. This powerful narrative piece would suit a study or a room with a historical or contemplative ambiance.
