The luminous gold ground of this panel, characteristic of 14th-century tempera painting, creates a radiant backdrop for Saint Judas Thaddeus. Simone Martini's meticulous brushwork is evident in the finely detailed halo and the rich folds of the saint's orange cloak, rendered with the vibrant pigments typical of the Sienese master. This portrait was once part of a predella, a series of small panels that adorned the base of an altarpiece, alongside other apostles such as Matthew, Simon, and James Major. Its remarkable state of preservation allows for a clear appreciation of Martini's delicate technique and the saint's pensive gaze
