The stark image of Christ on the cross forms the central axis of this painting, flanked by the sorrowful figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John. At the foot of the cross, a Carthusian monk kneels in humble prayer, his simple white scapular a striking element against the rich gold background. This devotional panel, painted around 1460 by Rogier Van Der Weyden using oil and gold on wood, was likely created for a monk's cell. The Carthusian order, founded by Saint Bruno in 1084, was known for its strict adherence to a solitary life of contemplation, silence, prayer, poverty, and penance
