Petrus Christus's Saint John the Baptist is a painting of subdued light and rich, deep colours, where the monumental figure of the saint emerges from a generally dark palette. Painted around 1445 in oil on panel, this work by the Bruges master, a probable pupil and successor to Jan van Eyck, depicts John as an isolated, imposing figure. He holds the Lamb of God, a profound symbol of Christ's sacrifice and redemption, rather than his traditional hairshirt. Christus's skill is evident in the detailed rendering of John's facial structure and the voluminous folds of his dark red cloak. In the background
