The rich texture of oil paint on canvas defines this compelling portrait. Executed by Jean Baptiste Vanmour between approximately 1727 and 1730, the artwork presents a standing figure identified as a kazasker, one of the two chief military judges of the Ottoman Empire. These powerful officials, responsible for either the European region of Rumelia or the Asiatic region of Anatolia, were instantly recognizable by their distinctive large turbans and fur-trimmed cloaks, both prominently featured here. Vanmour's brushwork skillfully renders the intricate folds of the garments and the judge's dignified expression
