Edgar Degas's choice of oil on fabric for this circa 1875 portrait allows for a striking blend of raw brushwork and emotional depth. The loose, flowing strokes capture the essence of his aunt, Stefania Carafa, portraying her with a stoic and world-weary expression. Her dark mourning dress, possibly worn in observance of her brother Achille's recent death, is rendered with broad, unfussy marks, contrasting with the subtle nuances of her face and its slightly watery-eyed gaze. Degas painted this noblewoman, a duchess from southwestern Italy, during an extended visit to Naples
