The mid-17th century witnessed fierce rivalries for maritime dominance, vividly depicted in Reinier Nooms's oil painting of the Battle of Leghorn. Created between 1653 and 1664, this canvas captures the dramatic naval engagement between the Dutch and English fleets off the Italian port of Livorno. Ships are locked in combat, cannons blazing and smoke billowing, as the Dutch secured a decisive victory that granted them control over Mediterranean trade. Nooms, a master of marine art, almost certainly painted this work for the Chamber of Levantine Trade in Amsterdam. This powerful and detailed historical scene is perfect for a living room or a historically-themed office.
