During the mid-18th century in Venice, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo created grand narrative paintings like this oil on canvas, often commissioned for aristocratic homes. This work, dating to around 1742-45, is the final piece in a series illustrating the epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata. It captures the dramatic moment when the knight Rinaldo, having left Armida's enchanted island, lands on the coast of Palestine to rejoin the crusader forces. The wise Magician of Ascalon holds Rinaldo's shield, using its reflective surface to reveal the heroic deeds of his ancestors, thereby inspiring the young warrior to fulfill his noble destiny. Rinaldo's resolute gaze, a contrast to his earlier depictions
