At the close of the 19th century, John Singer Sargent was the preeminent painter of high society, and this 1898 oil on canvas exemplifies his skill in capturing the elite of Venice. The artist, known for his ability to portray cosmopolitan figures, depicted Mrs. Ralph Curtis, an acquaintance who had recently married his distant cousin. She stands in an elegant satin gown, posing as if extending a welcome to guests in her grand Venetian residence. Sargent presented this work as a wedding gift to the couple, as noted by the inscription. This piece would bring a touch of old-world glamour to a dining room or a sophisticated entryway.
